Since hundreds of years, Timisoara has imposed itself as a place of cultural melting point. Music could make, of course, no exception. Since the second half of the XVIII nth century, various music organizations existed between Timisoara’s borders.
1871 marks the opening of the Philharmonic Society. The first concert, directed by Heinrich Weidt takes place on the 8th December 1871. Two vocal symphonic works are played: „Die Frithjofs Saga“ by Max Bruch and „Der Taucher“.
During the years, well-known players like Johannes Brahms (1879), František Ondriček (1893), Jan Kubelik (1900) or Bela Bartok (1906) appear on the stage of the Philharmonic Society.
In 1947, the Rumanian State Opera is opened. The building of the opera host by now four cultural institutions, sign of the strong intercultural interactions from Timisoara: the Romanian Opera, the Romanian national theater, the German states theater and the Hungarian theater “Csiky Gergely".
